Ksyos x Caro Health: a digital solution that transforms the bariatric care pathway
In an era where healthcare is increasingly driven by technological advancement, Ksyos has positioned itself as the digital hospital of the Netherlands. Since March 2023, Ksyos and Caro Health have joined forces to implement Caro's digital solution for the entire bariatric care path. The result: the Ksyos Bariatric app! Marthe Steenhuizen, Product Manager Obesity at Ksyos, is eager to share how this innovative solution improves the care pathway.
The Ksyos Bariatric app: education and monitoring in one
In April 2023, the Ksyos Bariatric app was launched, which digitizes the entire care pathway surrounding gastric surgeries. Marthe explains: "The app enables patients to receive care from healthcare providers from home, at the moment they need it, tailored to their needs. "Both the pre-and post-operative phases of the bariatric care path are available via the app. "As soon as patients are registered for the pathway, they receive a link to download the app. During the pre-operative phase, patients are prepared for the gastric surgery through an e-learning module and information about the pathway," clarifies Marthe. After the surgery, the focus shifts to information provision and continuous monitoring. Through automated questionnaires, including the standardized OBESI-Q questionnaire and periodic weight checks, healthcare providers can closely monitor the patient's health. Through a connection between Caro's system and Ksyos' Electronic Patient Dossier, healthcare providers can see the values directly in their own systems. “If something abnormal is detected, a task is automatically created to make contact. This eliminates the entire manual monitoring aspect and allows for more targeted work,” adds Marthe.

Providing accessible and efficient care via chat
The chat function in the app is one of the highlights, as it allows patients to easily contact the Ksyos outpatient staff. Marthe notes: "Patients can send a message in an easy manner, which suits today's world much more than calling or emailing.” She also hears a lot of positive feedback from the outpatient staff. “It's an easy way to establish contact. Usually, the outpatient department always calls, but patients don’t always answer, or sometimes it’s just not a good time. With chat, both the outpatient staff and the patients can respond at a time that works for them. You are less dependent on when someone is available. That works very pleasantly,” Marthe explains. Additionally, the app results in fewer incoming phone calls. “Many questions that patients have are answered via the app. Because they can easily contact the outpatient clinic through chat, they are less inclined to reach out to their GP or hospital. If needed, the outpatient clinic directs patients to the hospital. This is a great example of providing the right care in the right place,” Marthe enthusiastically shares.
Continuously innovating together
Together, there is continuous consideration of how the app can be further developed. “Caro is a wonderful partner to develop a product with. It’s a pleasure to work together. The app is continuously being improved, and the collaboration is very smooth,” says Marthe. Marthe is most looking forward to the automatic translations in the app, allowing patients to read information in their own language. “Within the Obesity pathway, we have many patients who do not speak Dutch well. If we can offer the content in their language soon, they will better understand it. This will enable them to gain more from the pathway, possibly leading to better results,” explains Marthe.
