Bart Schoon. Product / Engineer. Started as an iOS Engineer in 2018.
From his early days as an iOS developer, working on large projects such as the WeTransfer app, to becoming a full-stack engineer shaping the future of healthcare, Bart's journey revolves around the combination of his passion for technology and his mission to make a real impact on people's lives.
"When I started at Caro Health three years ago, I found a place where my skills really shone. I help build secure, user-friendly software for both patients and healthcare professionals".
A significant part of my work revolves around ensuring that every development process is secure, while the platform experience remains simple and effective at the same time.
As part of the information security team, I have played a key role in upgrading Caro’s system and seamlessly integrating health records into the platform. It's all about reducing manual work and providing real-time, accurate information to doctors and patients.
It is incredibly valuable to know that my work directly impacts the health and well-being of people.
Technology in the future of healthcare
Technology is rapidly transforming healthcare by strengthening the connection between patients and providers. While AI and automation can streamline many tasks, I believe they should never replace the human approach that makes care truly personal.
At Caro, we use AI to reduce administrative burdens so that healthcare professionals can focus on patient care. We support them with data collection, treatment advice, and predictive analytics, while the ultimate decisions always rest with human experts.
We bridge the gap between patients and healthcare professionals by centralising secure communication on one platform, so everyone has access to organised, real-time health information.
No more hassle with emails, phone calls, or different systems. Administrative tasks for doctors are reduced, and patients receive timely support.
To improve this even further, we have also tackled the challenge of multilingual communication. We developed an AI-powered translation tool that allows clinics to enter content in their native language, while the system automatically translates it for every patient. After a successful trial last year, we are now rolling this feature out across the entire platform.
Our patient-centric approach is what makes Caro truly unique—while many patient portals focus solely on data collection, which often leads to confusion and frustration, we ensure that EHR systems provide valuable insights for clinics, while patients actively contribute relevant data. This creates a seamless, integrated data flow.
Healthcare providers always have the latest information, patients receive personalised care, and by prioritising collaboration over competition, we build a healthcare ecosystem that truly benefits everyone.
The future of Caro
Caro is already a powerful tool, but I see it evolving with AI-driven insights that enable healthcare professionals to make smarter, faster decisions. Some exciting features I hope we will add are personalised health recommendations. Future features may include predictive analytics, deeper EHR integrations, and even more tools to improve outcomes for patients.
One idea I am particularly excited about?
A Large Language Model (LLM) plugin that allows patients to navigate their treatment journey through a real-time chat experience—asking questions and receiving personalised, actionable guidance based on their unique treatment plan.
I am driven by how technology can empower patients to better understand their treatment and actively participate in their care. When patients have clear insights into their health, they become more engaged and can make informed decisions, helping healthcare professionals see the complete picture. With the right information in real-time, decisions become sharper, treatments more effective, and care is tailored to each individual’s specific needs.
That’s what motivates me every day in my work at Caro.
